The Ultimate Travel Diaper Bag: What I Actually Pack

My diaper bag is the holy grail of traveling with kids — and honestly, essential to the success of any road trip. I’ve packed, repacked, and tried just about every combination out there to land on what I believe are the true essentials for an organized, thoughtful diaper bag that makes travel easier and more efficient.

Because when you’re on the road, the last thing you want is to spend extra time at a gas station.

Overpacking used to be my biggest flaw, especially after my first baby was born. But there’s nothing worse than trying to wrangle a baby on a tiny changing table in a questionable restroom (more on that later), while digging through a bag full of things you don’t actually need — covering everything in germs along the way.

As someone who is unapologetically Type A, the fear of not having what I needed drove a lot of my early packing decisions. But after many road trips, I’ve learned how to cut the noise and focus on the essentials.

Now, gas station diaper changes are quick pit stops instead of dreaded, drawn-out events.

Here’s what’s inside my travel diaper bag — the items that will truly save your sanity.

Dog Pads

These are perfect for changing at a gas station, airport bathroom or on an airplane. I don’t use the one that comes in my diaper bag in public spaces because I feel like there’s no good way to clean them. These are easy, quick to throw down, and easy to dispose of! (Plus, they don’t take up a lot of needed space!) Get them HERE

Boogie Antibacterial Hand Wipes

These are the best for a quick wipe down of hands, spaces you need to use, or any dropped items! They’re also good to quick wipe your own hands down when you can’t get to the sink with a wiggly toddler. Get them HERE

Travel Tube of Diaper Cream

My first child had consistent diaper rashes due to extremely sensitive skin- so every diaper change required cream. I keep a travel tube in our diaper bag and if it’s a longer stay the bigger jar gets packed in our actual suitcase. Get our favorite travel brand HERE

One Fresh Pack of Diaper Wipes

This may seem obvious- but a FRESH pack is essential. Every time I get home from a trip I repack our diaper bag- that way it’s ready to grab and go as needed. One of the first things I do is trade out the partial pack for a fresh one. Blow outs happen so you don’t know how many wipes you’ll need on one car or airplane ride, but one NEW pack has always kept me set!

Suction Toys

These are especially great when your baby is smaller- it gives them something to play with their hands (instead of touching all of the germs) and distract for a quick change. They are small- and can usually suction to your forehead (lol or maybe that’s just mine!). Also if you need to eat in a restaurant on the drive they’re great to have in the bag to stick to the table until the food comes! Get it HERE

Three to Five Diapers per Child

I only keep a couple of diapers in each size on hand for each kid. That way there’s enough to have for changing them on the travel but not taking up too much room. I usually either do a Walmart pickup/delivery of the diapers when I arrive at my destination to save on packing space.

*Flight Only*

When space is extra tight and I want less bags I also throw in an outfit change for each child.

The best thing you can do for yourself is keep your diaper bag light for quick changes! Unless it’s NEEDED on the road or in the air, pack it away in your suitcase for your destination only. It will save you time and your sanity!
